PRINCIPAL'S WELCOME
Tēnā koutou katoa,
Ko Taupiri te maunga
ko Waikato te awa
Nō Raahui Pookeka ahau
Ko Wakeman tōku whaanau
Ko Chrissy tōku ingoa
I am Chrissy Wakeman and I am incredibly proud to be the Principal here at Chelsea School. 2024 is my first year at Chelsea School, having previously been the Principal at a rural school in the mighty Waikato and Lead Principal of Te Raahui Pookeka Kaahui Ako. I hold a Masters in Educational Leadership (First Class Honours) and I see being a leader in education as a huge privilege. If I can come to school and bring out the absolute best in the team each and every day then our tamariki will be directly impacted by this and to me, that is everything. I have a saying I like to live by – Kindness is Magic – this is something that I thrive to model to all who I come into contact with.
Outside of school I love to spend time exploring our motu and adventuring with my whaanau; my partner, Nicholas and two girls Stella-Grace (14) and Kora-Nieve (12). I love to bake, am an avid reader and a staunch Warriors supporter (2024 is OUR year!).
I am so excited to meet your tamariki and become part of the Chelsea whaanau – don’t be a stranger, please pop in for a chat – I cannot wait to meet you!

OUR DNA
Our DNA has strong links to the key competencies from the New Zealand Curriculum, and the work of Carol Dweck based on the concept of ‘Growth Mindset.
In order to thrive as future-focused learners, we believe that our students must be able to:
Collaborate
– with each other, with teachers, whānau and members of the community.
Communicate
– to be able to use written and spoken words with a clear voice as well as symbols and code to communicate thoughts, feelings & ideas.
Be up for a Challenge
– to build their resilience and to persevere when faced with tricky learning or situations. We explicitly teach ‘Growth Mindset’.
Curious
– curiosity is at the heart of great learning. We want our learners to question and challenge in order to make connections to the world around them.
OUR VALUES
Our Values are key qualities and attributes that ‘Grow Great People’.
CULTURE & SPORT
We have such diverse learners at Chelsea, and we love any opportunity to celebrate who we are. We have two amazing Kapa Haka rōpū (groups) who we are incredibly proud of. They represent us at cultural festivals and are an important part of our school events such as pōwhiri.
Chelsea learners are ‘Up for the Challenge’ in many sporting codes and events. We enter school teams in competitions outside of the school for Netball, Basketball, Hockey, Flippa Ball and Soccer. Our Y4-6 learners participate in regular cluster sports events, such as swimming, rippa, athletics, netball…the list goes on. We are proud of our sports teams and the way that they show our school values on and off the field or court.
