Frequently Asked Questions

What is the walking school bus and how does my child hop on it?

The Walking School Bus is a fun, safe and active way for children to travel to and from school with adult supervision. Each bus walks along a set route with at least two adult "drivers", picking children up along the way and walking them to school.

Your child may hop on the bus at any stage along the route - many parents who do not actually live on the route drop their children off by car when they see the bus coming.

The Walking School Bus Programme is funded by the North Shore City Council, and consequently the children may also be provided with shower-proof ‘ponchos’ or other items as the need arises.

The Walking School Bus is driven by parent volunteers so we ask you to offer one morning a week (or more if you prefer) to walk with the children. If this is not possible for whatever reason, your children are welcome on the bus regardless. The walk is great exercise and the kids have a lot of fun on the way.

We have 3 routes operating now so please support the route most convenient to you. Your child may ‘board’ the bus at any point along the route:

1 Porritt Route – begins every morning at the corner of Mappin Place and Porritt Ave, walks up Porritt, turns left onto Chelsea View Drive, crosses at the pedestrian crossing and enters the school at the lower gate. Contact Lucy Chilbertor on 419-1260 for details.

2 Mokoia Route – begins every morning at the Liquor King/Fruit World carpark, walks along Mokoia, turns left into Balmain Road and enters the school beside the office. Contact Nikki Goldsworthy on 483-2722 for details.

3 Ravenstone Route – begins every morning at the corner of Ravenstone and Chelsea View Drive, walks down Chelsea View, crosses at the pedestrian crossing and enters the school at the lower gate. Contact Simon Franicevic on 419-9592 for details.

All buses commence at 8.20am.

If you are interested in joining the WSB please fill out a yellow registration form and return it to the office. If you have any questions please call Lucy Chilberto, the Walking Bus School Parent Co-ordinator, on 419-1260 or email at lucychil@hotmail.com. Or speak to the School Teacher Co-ordinator, Jenny Henderson.
