About Chelsea School

Chelsea School is a State primary school catering for 400 children on Auckland's North Shore. The school is built in a bush setting on a hilltop with magnificent views over the Harbour Bridge and Auckland City.

The school was built in 1981 and celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 2006. The school is in excellent condition. It is a variable space school and is organized into four syndicates. A Senior Teacher heads each syndicate. The New Zealand Curriculum is taught in the school, and children are cross-grouped by ability for English and Maths.

There is a considerable emphasis on individual needs with every child working at his or her own level. Units of work are pretested and post tested to ensure that each child is correctly placed and that learning is pitched at the correct level.

The strengths of the teachers are used through an interchange system for Physical Education and the Arts, especially in the senior part of the school. This ensures the children have the benefit of talent and experience in these cultural subjects.

The school has a well equipped computer suite. Each class has a weekly session in the suite, and their skills can then be developed and practised back in the classroom on the computer pods in each area.

The school is completely networked, including the library, which is fully computerized. Children have free access to the library each lunchtime, as well as having a weekly library skills lesson.

Swimming lessons are given to each child in Terms 1 and 4 as part of the Physical Education curriculum. Chelsea has many sports teams, and children from Year 4 to 6 may play for the school in Miniball, Netball or Hockey.

The school provides an enriched learning environment and has high standards in all areas. Independence is fostered and encouraged, and the skills of time management are taught from an early age. We have high expectations for behaviour and effort throughout the school and as a result, the playground is a friendly, comfortable place for all age groups.

The school puts an emphasis on whole school activities and one such intensive is usually held every year.

Chelsea strives at all times to be an example of educational excellence; hence our motto: "Simply the Best".
